TASK proudly celebrated its 50th Anniversary, commemorating five decades of providing education, advocacy, and support for individuals with disabilities and their families. The milestone was recognized at the 50th Anniversary Gala on September 18, 2025, bringing together community members, partners, and supporters to honor TASK’s lasting impact.
This year also marked the 50th Anniversary of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), highlighting TASK’s ongoing role in supporting families to navigate special education and ensuring access to inclusive learning opportunities.
Since its founding by Jean Turner and Jan McHugh, TASK has made a profound difference in the lives of families across Southern California. Over the past 50 years, the organization has provided over 250,000 services, reached more than 72,000 parents, professionals, youth with disabilities, and family members through workshops and training events, and supported over 80,000 unduplicated families.
The gala featured inspiring keynote speakers, live performances, and awards recognizing individuals and organizations that have advanced TASK’s mission. Highlights included honoring Turner and McHugh for their lifelong dedication to children with disabilities, as well as celebrating the contributions of community partners and advocates.
Reflecting on the milestone, Jan McHugh, co-founder of TASK, said:
“Just as we were in the 1970s—with so many questions and new laws—we’re once again entering a time of change and new challenges. I encourage you to face them with the same strength, compassion, and dedication that have guided TASK for the past 50 years. And please, never forget who you are—you’re TASK, a true Team of Advocates for Special Kids.”
TASK’s 50th Anniversary Gala not only celebrated the organization’s history but also reinforced its commitment to promoting inclusion, expanding access to assistive technology, and supporting families as they navigate special education.
